Look back an Anger, mastery Assignment, A critical Overview

JOHN OSBORNE AS A MODERN DRAMATIST

John Osborne, in full John James Osborne, (born December 12, 1929, England—died December 24, 1994, Shropshire), was a British playwright whose Look Back in Anger (performed 1956) made him known as the first of the “Angry Young Man a phrase coined as a flame-throwing socialist.

    LIFE AND WORKS:

He was born in 1929, in England. Osborne’s father died before he was quite young. He took jobs on several trade journals, but soon he was invited as an actor in the company. Then, Osborne wrote his first play, Look Back in Anger but it was rejected by all. But later, Look Back in Anger received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. He died of heart failure December 24, 1994.

    MAJOR WORKS:

He was famous for his plays that include: "The Entertainer, The World of Paul Slickey,Luther and Look Back in Anger.  Many of his works are considered classics of modern literature.

    CHARACTERISTICS AS A MODERN DRAMATIST:

    Ø  Autobiographical Writer
    Ø  Realist and Socialist
    Ø  Characterization
    Ø  Plot-Construction

    AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL WRITER:
The plays are a mirror of Osborne’s life rather than the outer world; they are more personal than universal. “Look Back in Anger” is known as the play which holds autobiography of Osborne.  The Jimmy, the hero and the Osborne are similar to each other. The play is autobiographical, based on Osborne’s personal agony; the manner in which he faced the society is reflected in his work. Osborne reflects his unhappy marriage with Lane through the character of Alison. Lane is the image of Alison. Madeline the lost love of Jimmy is the image of Stella Linder, an old actress who inspired Osborne to write.

    REALIST AND SOCIALIST:

Osborne in his play makes an individual suffer and finally allows him to show hardships of life and shows positive energy in him.  He as a socialist shows the inner emotions and real psyche of human beings.  As in the play Jimmy shapes himself as a positive human being from a negative perspective of life. He describes World War, the atomic bomb, and British Empire to show the loss the innocence.

    CHARACTERIZATION:

                                               John Osborne was the master of characterization.  Through the characters and their actions, he keeps his play forward. Alison and Jimmy’s relationship is the main place where class tension is displayed. Alison comes from an upper class background while Jimmy belongs to a working class. Both the Jimmy and Alison have chance to maintain their marriage but the marriage is based on class difference which is totally different.  A critic remarks;
“In Look Back in Anger class boundaries are ultimately brief and inadequate.”
Hence, his characters are life-like and each character keeps a story in itself and through his actions and motives, Osborne narrates the story.

    PLOT-CONSTRUCTION:

Look Back in Anger” has old-fashioned plot but it is a well-made play. There is one plot developed over three acts and the basic plot device is ancient: an unsuccessful marriage compounded by a love triangle. Some plot devices stand out as the author’s autobiography, such as Cliff’s exit in Act I to buy cigarettes, and Alison is about to tell Jimmy that she is pregnant. The act II in which Osborne shows two women left looking at each other is clearly artificial. Hence, the plot of the play is inter-woven and is not easy to be understood.

    CONCLUSION:

To sum up, John Osborne is one of the most promising classic novelists of all time. His writing helped to set the style for the modern novel. The influence of his work has continued through the years, not only on British literature but worldwide. His plays have been made into successful films. Look Back in Anger has been recognized as a bombshell that blew up the old British theater  .
