Outline of History of English Literature
As far as
history of English Literature is concerned, it is quite difficult to summarize
it. However, history of English Literature can be outlined in a way that it can
enhance the knowledge and information of readers. From 8th century
to onwards, a large number of books which are uncountable have been written by
a lot of authors. In a period, there are many writers who introduced themselves
through their writings and their writings are also in very great number.
Hence,
English Literature is divided into following phases;

Phase (From 8th
century to 14th century)
Ø 2nd phase
(From 15th century to 18th century)
Ø 3rd
phase (From 19th
century to 20th century)
Ø 4th
Phase Post-Modern age
Each phase
of English Literature holds many periods and sub-periods. These periods are
named in relation to the famous or populous person or event of the concerned
age. This famous person can be the King of the period or the famous writer of
the age. The event can be the big change in the county or any revolution with
which Britain was influenced. This classification helps us a lot to understand
the literary progress and nourishment in detail. Let’s us discuss the
importance of phases.

1st PHASE:
The first phase of
the English Literature is very important and is much complicated. Important in
a sense that to it tells us not only the origin of English Literature but also
it describes the origin of Britain also. Complicated in a way that there is no
proper evidence about as from where the English Literature started or who was
the first English writer or which was the first document or book of English
Literature?
Hence, with the help of biographers and the evidences
provided by them we can estimate and can consider the beginning of English
Literature. The first phase of English Literature is consisted of following
periods;
1. Stone-Hinge
Period
2. Old English
Period or Anglo Saxon Period
3. Medieval
period or age of Chaucer
The stone
hinge period describes the origin of English Language as how English language
was started. It spans from 8th century to 10th century. Then, Anglo-Saxon period (1066-14th
Century) comes and in last, we have age of Chaucer (14th century to
15th century).
